RANA PLAZA DISASTER
WHAT IS 'SUPPLY CHAIN'?
Supply chain is the process in which clothes get from it's first rough design, to being on the rails in a high street store.
WHAt?
The Rana Plaza disaster occured on the 24th April 2013
A factory where 1000's worked in Bangladesh collapsed to the ground after it was evactuated the day before due to workers being concerned about cracks they had been seeing.
It was an 8 story building (2 floors had been illegally added by the owner)
It killed over 1000 people and left over 2000 injured.
Rana Plaza was a garment factory. After the disaster many high street stores labels were found amongst the ruins, these stores didn't even know their garments were being made there..
WHAT was done TO HELP?
Brands, who were thought to be involved with the factory, were asked to give compensation to this disaster. They need millions to clear up the ruins.
Brands like Primark, Inditex and Benetton were a few of the brands that did pay compensation. However, there are still some brands that did not give towards the cause, brands like Mango, Matalan and YesZee. The Clean Clothes Campign are keeping track of who have and have not given to help Bangladesh.
