5 Signs your son is a future Rugby Star

Find out what position this is and encourage development around the skills needed to play this position. If it turns out to be flanker, encourage lots of tackling and ball hunting, if it’s halfback, encourage lots of passing and acceleration and if it is full back, go for counter attacking and penetrating the line. 4. Leads by example

Whether your child is the run-on captain or simply someone who prefers to do instead of talk, this is another great sign your child may be a future rugby star. Most of the time, especially during the developmental years, players look to an inspirational leader and tend to follow the flock so to speak. If your son is already leading by example and continues to inspire his young team mates, he must be doing something right.

Captaincy is talk for later, but it is a very important role of a player. The captain must be the medium between coach to players and players to referee. Usually the captain either has great leadership qualities, is a player who simply does what’s required or is sometimes good at defusing situations and mediating the game. If a captain can do all three, all the better. If your son already leads by example, chances are he may have leadership qualities as well as being a future rugby star.

5. Does the extras

This is probably one of the most defining characteristics of whether your son or daughter will grow up to be a future rugby star. I am a big advocate of putting in the time and effort to receive the results, and that means going outside of regular training hours and sessions and doing some extra work. Like we said above, if your son has the work ethic and desire, we can teach him the rest.

An example of your son doing the extras might be taking a few cones and a few balls down the local park and practises in his own time. It might be practising goal kicking, the box kick, individual fitness, passing accuracy, lineout throwing or any other individual work on. If your son does this, that’s a telling sign he is on his way to being a future rugby star.
