the silk road
Lives have been ruined or even lost in the process. A popular and most remembered site would be the Silk Road. It was an online black market and the very first darknet marketplace. The site was launched back in 2011 by Ross William Ulbricht. In October of 2013, the FBI shut down the Silk Road and convicted Ulbricht with charges of money laundering, computer hacking, and conspiracy to traffic narcotics. He was sentenced to life in prison without the chance of parole.
Accessing the deep web is easy, and almost anyone with a personal computer can access it. I believe that it’s our right as US citizens that we should have access to it instead of Laws making it harder to access. Not everyone uses the deep web for illegal operations. People can go there to learn new things, explore the city they live in, and make new discoveries. But then again, there are its downsides like the illegal interactions. The deep web impacts your everyday life more than you think. I feel like people should try using it at least once to see if they like it or not. Then from there they can put out their personal opinion on if it is as bad as its hyped up to be.
Using the deep web is full of risks, seeing things you don’t want to or even buying something you’ll regret. When someone’s caught using the deep web for illegal purposes, Law Enforcements response is swift brutal. Low time dealers like to purchase things off the deep web in the safety of their home. Then eventually, they’ll run into a police informant. From there, a whole operation is started to shut down the dealer. Once the FBI, DEA, or local law enforcement has enough evidence, they move in, usually kicking down the door shouting, guns draw, and if you’re lucky, a dog is with them. I say if you’re lucky because without a dog to alert for evidence, the police will TEAR apart the suspect’s home without a care in the world. Then a whole trial begins, ending in sentencing and so forth.

Terrorism on the deep web
However, low level drug offenders are the least of the federal government’s problems. The bigger threat is foreign or even domestic terrorists. According to a CNN article, terror attacks carried out in Brussels could have been orchestrated using the deep web. Law officials speculated materials used in the attacks could have been acquired using the deep web. Communications on the deep web could be as simple chat rooms or even more complex like a server secured and encrypted by passkeys. So in my honest opinion, I feel as though governments around the world are more interested in the drug trade than terrorism. Terrorism could be prevented, with just a few more resources being put toward creating watch lists, or monitoring terror oriented chat rooms and forums on the deep web.
