North Korea is truly a country the United States, even the United Nations, needs to monitor closely. As many of you may know, North Korea has been pushing their limits by testing nuclear weapons frequently, which is shamed upon by most countries. Before getting into the nuclear weapons topic, the everyday life of North Koreans needs to be addressed.
A young North Korean boy named Joseph Kim at the age of 15 decided it was time to escape the terrible country, "I knew the journey would be risky, but I would be risking my life either way." Joseph later said, "I could die of starvation like my father in North Korea, or at least I could try for a better life by escaping to China." (North Korea VS. The World, Zissou). Thousands of people are trying to escape the economically disastrous country every day. According to the 2017 index of Economic Freedom, North Koreans are completely repressed from freedom. They have little to no knowledge of anything except North Korean history. The people are starving in North Korea. A report published 1999 by BBC World News stated “3.5 million North Koreans have starved to death since 1995." Some of this tragedy is due to famine and drought; however, North Korea’s government policies have shortened food supply for those not politically important. The North Korean people suffer, and they also face another danger because of their leader Kim Jong-Un’s remarks towards other countries.
