A treaty entered into by the U.S, Mexico, & Canada went into effect on January 7, 1994. The Northern Negotiations Free Trade Agreement otherwise known as “NAFTA”. Trump called NAFTA the worst trade agreement ever and promised if elected the U.S would withdraw from the agreement. Trumps Empty vision of trade can’t solve America’s problems. After public pressure Trump agreed to renegotiate NAFTA rather to withdraw it.

What exactly is NAFTA’s purpose? NAFTA critics in the labor, human rights, & environmental communities and has created continent wide partnerships. NAFTA has helped the three nations stimulate growth & collaborate to address continent wide problems. Due to NAFTA regional trade increased sharply. Canada and Mexico are not only neighbors and close allies, but also America’s most important trade partners. Mexico’s hope was that freer trade would build stronger economic growth to Mexico providing new jobs and more opportunities. For the U.S and Canada, Mexico was seen as a new market for exports and a lower cost investment location. Now neither Canada & Mexico want to give Trump the opportunity to incapacitate the talks.

If Trump decides to withdraw NAFTA it would harm America’s economic growth over the next few years. Many Americans don’t want to abandon NAFTA, instead they want trade agreements like NAFTA strengthened. If pulled out citizens and policy makers in other countries will not trust the U.S to keep commitments or negotiate new ones.
