Why did we choose those Eras?

On the previous page was our era’s video. As a group collectively we decided to base our video on the fashion of the 1920s, the 1950s and the 1970s, as we believe that they are the most iconic and influential eras. We decided to each take one era and focus on that era. Stephanie focused on the 1920s, as that was her favourite era; Natalie chose the 1950s because she liked the different styles of that era. I chose the 1970s because I am very fascinated by all of the different subcultures in the 1970s.

Our first era that we chose was the 1920s. We all thought that the 1920s has a massive impact on fashion today, as towards the end of the 1920s, women were very rebellious. This was when flappers came about. Women wore beaded garments and all of their outfits were often paired with something fur. Women’s hemlines were short; they smoked cigarettes and drank alcohol. We believe that this was the start of the rebelliousness that continued through out the century, as it flowed into the 1930s and the 1940s. Before the 1920s, women didn’t really have an identity, they all wore the same sort of thing, as the flappers style came into fashion everyone began to form different styles. We believe that this influences us today, as everyone has their own style in todays society.

All of us believe that the 1950s was a very influential era on fashion today, that’s why we included it in our video. I think that the 1950s era relates to the 1920s, as the 1950s was the birth of the teenager, as teenagers finally had an identity, rather than wearing what their parents wore and being classed as an adult. This relates to the 1920s because the flapper girls were very rebellious, as were teenagers in the 1950s. In the 1950s, women had many iconic fashion looks in the 1950s such as the Teddy Girls Look, Poodle skirts and The Sweater Girl look. As a group, we thought that the Teddy Girl look was a very iconic look in the 1950s, that’s why we chose garments in our video to recreate that look.
