This one was made for Girlguiding Essex West by Hannah

Perhaps you might like to make a card in your unit and
send greetings North to the celebrating Rainbows, the
address is included, right.
Happy Birthday 19th and 22nd St Martin Rainbows from
all of us here in Essex West
ack in 1977, when I was a 13 year old Guide, I wrote to the post-box secretary at Guide
Headquarters asking for a pen-friend. In July of that year, I received a letter from a 13 year
old Dutch girl called Carolien.
Like me, she was the middle child of three children; she enjoyed handicrafts and playing the
piano and was a keen Girl Scout.
We corresponded frequently and in 1979 we met for the first time. I travelled by ferry
to the Hoek van Holland where her family met me and drove to her home town of
Winschoten.
Whilst there, I went to Girl Scout meetings, school and did some sight-seeing as well as
finding out firsthand about the Dutch way of life. After two weeks, we both travelled to
England, where we visited my sister at camp at Kingsdown in Kent, visited Cambridge as well
as showing her some of London.
Our friendship has continued over the past 35 years – we have been to each other’s weddings, held babies and although we now correspond by email more often than letter, we still try to
see one another annually.
I count Carolien as one of my best friends and closest
confidantes – a friend whom I truly
value and whom I would not have met had it not been for Guiding.

n Saturday 2 June
just under fifty members of Girlguiding
Collier Row District held a
tea party in celebration of
the Queen’s Diamond
Jubilee. We had fun making
crowns and flags and after
the tea party we sang
songs. We were all given a
Jubilee pencil and The
Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Badge to take home. Here we are enjoying our party food and our special thanks go to Sainsbury in
The Brewery, Romford for donating £50 worth of food towards our event.
Peru Trip for Sophie
have been offered a place through Girl Guiding UK to
work with the Kiya Survivors charity in Peru. Kiya
Survivors is a charity which provides education, a safe
haven and a home for over 200 disabled children in Peru.
As a developing country little is known about disability
and many disabled children are feared and scorned as curses from God.
Scared and ashamed many parents lock away their
children where they are subject to physical, sexual and
mental abuse.
This is w here Kiya comes in; they provide special care
and education for these children in a safe, happy environment. Kiya hires psychologists, teachers and doctors to aid
the children in their development and allow them to have the
happy and full lives they deserve.
When we’re in Peru we’ll be helping to build a sensory
garden – a garden with lots of plants and ornaments to
touch, see and smell. It’s only a small project but it’ll be hard
work and make a world of difference for the children.
We’ll also be working with the children educating them
through music, art and play.
Still it’s not going to be all work, work, work we also get
the chance to hike the Inca trail, a two day, 40km trek to the
ancient settlement of Machu Picchu .
I look forward to sharing my stories and photos with you
on my return.
