ainbows and Brownies
of Church Langley held
a special night recently
to send "Shoeboxes to
Afghanistan".
We collected "goodies " to
send out to the service personnel and doggies.
The boxes included letters,
pictures, sweets, toiletries,
snacks, hair bobbles, gloves,
dog treats and toys etc.
We managed to send over
100 boxes, one for each year of
Guiding!
What great fun we had in this challenge and was
greatly supported by family and friends.
The boxes eventually arrived in Afghanistan and we
now are receiving some wonderful replies and Bluies
(emails from Army Units).

Disability does not hold Zoe back
oe Lepine, 15, a young leader at 2nd Tilbury (Parish Church) and 3rd
Aveley (All Saints) Guides, has been nominated and reached the finals for
a 2011 Essex Police Young People of the Year (YOPEY) Award.
The award was for her achievements in Girlguiding and being heavily involved
with her school community, as well as taking part in activities and sports despite
a number of disabilities. These include a shortened left arm and limited mobility
in her shoulder after being diagnosed with the bone condition osteomyelitis soon
after birth.
Zoe now faces another health challenge after developing tremors and having
tests, including those for Parkinson’s Disease.
The nomination was made by Zoe’s school as a result of her acting as a
positive role model including taking a lead role in an anti-smoking campaign
supported by South West Essex PCT and her achievements in volunteering to
coach sports in primary schools and those achievements made within
Girlguiding.
Within guiding Zoe “is worth her weight in gold….always there to help at the
meetings and on trips and camps”. She also provides invaluable support on a
one-to-one basis for guides with special needs.
YOPEY founder Tony Gearing said : “Youth movements like the Guides
depend on dedicated volunteers. In Zoe, South Essex Guides have found someone who really goes that extra mile using her own experience to improve the
lives of others”.
