SPRING 2015
Oh yes you can... smart ideas from the County Arts Team
he County Arts Team is ready to show you
how all the arts and crafts shown here are
available to you, either at your unit meeting
or at a District or Division event.
There are all sorts available from glass engraving
and decorating, pyrography – burning designs onto
wood, cork and leather to create wonderful
personalised items, quilling, card making, iris
folding, textiles and silk painting.
Unusual crafts must include encaustic art, the
ancient Egyptian art of painting with hot wax. It is
done with a special iron which looks like a small
travel iron. It is perfectly possible to create
stunning works of art in seconds, really!
And if there is a craft you would like to explore,
but don’t know how, then the Arts Team is just the right place to enquire.
The Arts Team, led by Pat Parsons, have a wealth of skills between them and are all ready to help you and
your unit learn how to make wonderful hand crafted gifts. The list of possibilities is endless, decoupatch,
calligraphy, rubber stamping, you name it they will
be able to help you and if you come up with a craft
the team don’t know about, they are keen to learn
so they can pass it on.
You can contact Pat and the team via the office
or by emailing Pat Parsons on ppatpar@aol.com.
Remember, the world is your oyster…..decorate
it!!!!!

ight Guides from the Upminster North
District had a wonderful time at Pax
Lodge for their Baden Powell Adventure
weekend.
We had already pre‐arranged that we would
meet Guides from Worcs with their Division
Commissioner Julia Routledge. The girls enjoyed
a Monopoly Challenge around London, a quick
tour of the Camden Lock, Market and
International food stalls, and an International
evening, meeting Leaders from Sweden, Canada,
Australia and the USA.
E
The girls also gained their World Guiding Badge as well! So a wonderful Baden Powell
Adventure with a London, an International and WAGGS flavour! I am sure the girls will
never forget their BP Adventure, definitely a Mountain Top moment! Our thanks to Jack
Petchey as the adventure for 5th Upminster Guides was paid for from a Jack Petchey Award
gained by Sarah Goddard ( Young Leader) who also went with us.
If any Guider wants informal information/help on arrangements at Pax Lodge, then
please do not hesitate to contact me‐ Diane Dickerson

ack in June and July 2014, 4th Grays Guides completed a
challenge badge called Ready Steady Glasgow! which was
linked to the Commonwealth G ames taking place in Glasgow
that July.
We were challenged to raise money for the Dame Kelly
Holmes Trust which provides disadvantaged young people with
support and mentoring from world class sporting champions to
help them be the best that they can be.
As a result of raising £50 for the trust, we were chosen to
receive a visit from a sporting champion as a thank you!

On Thursday 5th March the girls from 7th Grays Brownies visited
The Trop Shop Pets, in Grays. We had a fantastic evening learning
all about pet care and meeting some of the usual and more exotic
pets in the shop. After stroking rabbits, a rat, a guinea pig, a
tortoise and a snake, all the girls agreed that rabbits are the best!
Many thanks to Ian from The Trop Shop for making this possible,
7th Grays Brownies. Mel Lyon
If your unit/District/Division is organising an event,
please let David Henderson know so we can arrange
coverage for the newsletter and website.
On Thursday 8th January we had a visit from 25 year old Essex
based Sam Breary, a European and World Sailing Champion. Sam
spent the evening with the Guides and Rangers, he told us a little
about his career so far and about sailing and also about the work
of the Dame Kelly Holmes Trust. Sam ran a series of games and
challenges for the girls, all with a link to sailing and the skills
needed to succeed. We had a really interesting and fun evening
and wish Sam all the best with his future career.
The photo shows the girls with Sam during the final of the
Rock, Paper, Scissors championship that was one of the evening’s
activities.
