PAGE 2 GGEW NEWS SPRING 2015 ngar Senior Guide Emma Mason 16. has completed the Girlguiding Chief Guide Challenge. This is the highest award before the Queens Guide award. Emma worked her way through eight challenges including; Community Action, Creativity, Fit for Life, Independent Living, International, Leadership, Out of doors and Personal Values. The challenge was set over two years with each area taking months to complete. For her leadership challenge Emma completed the Young Leadership award, working with Brownies and learning such things as Safeguarding and how to run a Brownie unit. Emma’s International knowledge was put to the test when she was put forward to a selection weekend in London . She was successful in gaining a place on the World Scout Jamboree and will be travelling to Japan this summer. The Out of Doors challenge took Emma out of her comfort zone not only did she participate in climbing, zip wire, white water rafting and gliding but she also took part in survival camps. “Camping in the winter without a tent and cooking on an open fire in the freezing rain was a challenge !” Said Emma. A first Response course was also undertaken with the rest of her unit as well as lots of community service. Emma is a member of The Ongar District Senior Guide unit 14-25. “The unit has had one girl complete the Chief Guide Challenge in the past but others are now making good progress to follow in Emma’s foot steps”, said leader Veronica Riches. The Ongar unit also have two other young ladies participating in International trips this summer. They will be volunteering in sch ools and clinics in India and Nepal. The Unit are looking forward to 2016 as Senior Guides will be celebrating 100 years. The Ongar unit will be joining with the rest of the country not only in celebrating and joining in activities but completing service projects home and aboard. GGEW NEWS SPRING 2015 O 3rd GIDEA PARK ST MICHAEL’ BROWNIES On Friday 2nd January 2015 Grace Barnard Brownie Leader with the 3rd Gidea Park St Michael’s Brownies was presented with her Adult Leaders Certificate and Badge. Grace was a Brownie, Guide, Pack Leader and Young Leader at St Michael’s; she was presented with her certificate and badge by her Mentor Sarah Cassidy at a meal for past and present St Michael’s Leaders and Helpers. The meal was held at the Harvester Gidea Park. hadwell Brownies made a trip to see Santa at Langdon Hills. As you can see he was really good. C Anabel made her promise at the top of the hill. Before I fell in the mud! Then we walked to Santa’s cottage and saw the elf’s workshops and a sleeping Rudolf as well as doing a Santa quiz. Into see Santa and very quiet Brownies!!! Cost of materials, Iris Folding, A very attractive and easy way to create a ‘topper’ for a greetings card or a picture to put in a frame for Mothers Day. Suitable for a unit meeting Charge for materials used Using pre‐cut cards and special paper, create an attractive picture which can be used as a card topper or piece of art for framing. Quilling which is great for card creations Good for a unit meeting Charge for materials used And there is so much more. Beadcraft and jewellery making, an ideal craft for all ages, cost of materials. Barge Painting which is a craft more suited to older age group. This is the art of decorating pots etc as seen on many of the canal barges in the UK. Then there is the art of candle decorating, a craft which is suited to all age groups and ideal for a unit meeting, cost is materials used. Textile craft includes creating stunning ‘exploding boxes’ for jewellery or memory boxes. Cost is the materials used. Silk Painting is a craft more suited to a dedicated craft day because it does take more time than many of the other crafts on offer. Cost will be materials used. This is really just a taster for the many crafts on offer.
