Inner Self ..................................................... Q2/Prose
Inner Self narrates a story about a girl fighting with herself, trying to decide on life decisions. The genesis of this piece arrived at me one day while I was doing my homework. I was basically deciding whether I should do my homework or not. I thought that it was a perfect time to write a piece about what I was passing through that same exact moment, me fighting against myself. As a teenager, I fight with myself a lot; half of me wants to do something and the other half wants to accomplish the opposite. Sometimes you end up taking the wrong decisions, but this is something normal in life. This piece started out completely as a different one. I was writing a short story in the perspective of a pet narrating how he saw kids being treated as animals in an orphanage. I decided to change my whole work because something went completely wrong and I couldn’t find a way to fall in love with that piece. Even though I haven’t received peer feedback on this piece, it was able to improve it through revision and editing. For example, I started by writing a piece about a girl that is literal and physically fighting with herself. I preferred to change it, by tricking the reader into believing that the character is sleeping and having dreams, but in reality is just herself fighting against her inner self. I am proud of what I accomplished with this piece and believe it is one my best prose pieces that were written in quarter two. My favorite part of this piece is the following, “The droplets of rain were hitting my window. A melody was created, hypnotizing my mind and making me drunk. In less than three minutes I was out”. I am happy with this specific quote because it is the first part of the piece where the reader starts to believe that the character falls asleep. A weakness of this short story is that the format is too simple. Maybe I could have altered the format and the shape of the piece, to have a physical representation of a fight but with words. In general, I appreciate
what I did and feel delighted with my accomplishments.
