Georgia Parole Review Spring/Summer 2025

Engaging State Paroling Authorities

The Georgia State Board of Pardons and Paroles is engaging other paroling authorities regarding operations and decision making.

The Arkansas Post-Prison Transfer Board and Georgia began a dialogue in May during the Association of Paroling Authorities International conference.

"There's probably not two states that operate parole exactly the same, however there are many commonalities in our processes," says Executive Director of the Georgia Parole Board, Chris Barnett.

"We were interested in learning about their parole process while also providing their officials with additional requested information about ours. Witnessing those processes in person provides valuable insight. The engagement is all about seeing if there are things either state can improve on and therefore enhance public safety for our communities," added Barnett.

Georgia Board Members David Herring and Robert Markley observed Arkansas' processes.

"We received a lot of useful information from the Arkansas Board. I was very appreciative of them hosting us," said Parole Board Chairman David Herring.

"I believe this is a dialogue that we can continue to further research potential enhancements to our systems," stated Markley.

Georgia Board Members and staff provided information about our scientific, data-driven, parole decision making process. The Georgia Board is also engaged with several other states.
