Public Board Meetings Keep the Agency Focused on Mission
The Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles conducted a monthly operational public meeting in Atlanta on May 2nd.
A notice of consideration to amend the Board's clemency guidelines was introduced and initially adopted by the Board as the first step in the administrative procedures act required to update the guidelines system. The Board utilizes a guidelines system in the parole decision process in compliance with Georgia law and industry best practices.
As a part of Executive Director Chris Barnett's report, new and recently promoted employees were recognized, along with staff who recently achieved new levels of professional and academic success. Clemency Division Director Crystal Moon was also recognized regarding the recent resolution passed by the Georgia House of Representatives which praised Moon's commitment to public service (HR406).
"Our agency's staff continue to strive to enhance their knowledge, skills and abilities. Providing and recognizing these opportunities is a major part of being a continuous learning agency. I am proud of their achievements and contributions to our public safety mission," Barnett said.
The Georgia Office of Victim Services recapped the many successful events conducted during National Crime Victims' Rights Week (NCVRW) honoring crime victims and crime survivors. NCVRW 2023 was April 23-29. (see page 12).
The operational board meetings include updates on the day-to-day operations of the agency, policy reviews and presentations. Parole decisions and discussions regarding specific offenders are not a part of the meetings. Parole decisions are made daily by the Board Members.
