The State Board of Pardons and Paroles conducted a successful panel session at this year's GPACS (Georgia Professional Association of Community Supervision) Mid-Winter Training Conference. Chairman Terry Barnard and Board Members David Herring and Tim Ward along with Executive Director Chris Barnett were panelists for the session, "The Georgia Parole Board and the Community Supervision Officer." In the session, the panel discussed how public safety is enhanced because of the professional relationship between the Parole Board and Community Supervision Officers.
"The Board appreciated the opportunity to speak to Georgia's felony supervision staff at this conference. The professional relationship the Parole Board has with the Department of Community Supervision (DCS) is excellent and maintaining that level of communication and cooperation is very important to public safety," stated Chairman Barnard.
"The GPACS conference provides excellent training and speakers relevant to our work at the State Board of Pardons and Paroles, and especially to the community supervision staff," said Board Member David Herring.
"The panel discussion allowed
DCS officers and the GPACS members to receive the perspective of three board members and our Executive Director regarding reentry and supervision," added Herring.
GPACS is a non-profit professional association representing community supervision in Georgia. GPACS membership includes community supervision, parole, juvenile probation, misdemeanor probation and corrections staff employed by the Georgia Department of Community Supervision, the State Board of Pardons and Paroles, the Georgia Department of Corrections, and county and private misdemeanor agencies.
"Engaging the GPACS members by attending this conference and holding this panel discussion allows the Board to continue working in unison with the Department of Community Supervision and the Department of Corrections to provide enhanced public safety to all Georgians. Successful reentry can't be accomplished without this strong partnership," said Executive Director Barnett.
The Parole Board's Director of Communications, Steve Hayes, moderated the panel discussion.
