Through a partnership with Central Georgia Technical College ( CGTC ), Emergency Medical Technician ( EMT ) classes are being offered to select GDC Correctional Officers ( COs ). The EMT course prepares COs to provide first-responder capabilities within the facilities with basic , non-invasive interventions and care to help minimize secondary injury while transporting patients to an emergency care facility . The courses offer hands-on and field training in various medical topics such as stabilizing and safely transporting patients for all emergency calls , assisting patients using essential medical equipment , and providing necessary treatment onsite and during the ambulance ride to the hospital .
After nine months of training courses , clinicals , and assessments , the COs will be allowed to complete the National Registry Certification to become certified Emergency Medical Technicians .
