GBT Newsletter Autumn | Page 2

In The News By Ted Gorski We are celebrating a milestone in Team GBT history with this newsletter. Lottie Gorski, the wife of Ted Gorski Sr. is celebrating her 90th birthday. In 1957, Gorski Bulk Transport started business as the idea of Ted & Lottie Gorski from their farm in Harrow, ON. Regardless of the angst and concern about what the future may hold; they moved forward. Since then, the regulations, technology, equipment and customers have kept transportation changing in ways that no one could have foreseen. I’m sure everyone has some great memories of changes, new things that they were part of and the successes they enjoyed. It is great to take a moment to look back at the changes that have taken place in Gorski Bulk Transport and some of the key values that hold true for today. The days of gasoline powered tractors, PCV & ICC operating authority, license plates for every state, bingo cards are long behind us. Whether or not these are good or bad changes doesn’t matter. What does matter is that we overcame the change and moved forward, many carriers did not overcome the change and are part of yesterday’s memories. For me this shows that all of us can overcome the challenges of today & tomorrow and succeed. How can we do this you ask? By sticking to the key values that have carried all of us forward through the years, some of the most important ones are Safety and Customer Service. Many times I have heard competitors and businessmen say that the day of the trucker is over. The reasons they give are numerous and I know everyone has heard or seen them before. For example; “Deregulation will kill the industry, no carrier will survive except the very big ones”, well several of the biggest like Matlack, Chemical Leaman, Coastal & Leaseway don’t exist today. “Weight laws will never change”, yet the weight increased from 73,280 GVW to 80,000 GVW and business increased. “The railroads will take over all of the business”, and in the past 20 years we have seen a steady retreat by the railroads and many, many miles of rail ripped up. “ISO Containers are taking over the industry”, the container business has grown but isn’t replacing the tank truck industry any time soon. The alphabet soup of regulations arrived in C-TPAT, PIP, CSA 2010, FAST, TWIC have made our lives busier and more challenging but we have adapted and changed to meet the standards. How did we get through all of this? By being focused on our customers, how to get their products delivered safely and using technology to give GBT a competitive edge over our competition. When it comes to safety at GBT, this is something that everyone is actively involved with. Safety at GBT has evolved as we have moved forward through the years. There is now more highway traffic and a higher level of security than at any time before which makes Safety a major 2 focus. Transportation is a very different industry today than when the company started doing business in 1957. Today when we get frustrated with delays on route, delays at the border, security checks and the other drivers on the highway. Look back at things that have changed for the better such as; lights, seats, suspensions, engines, transmissions, braking systems, tires and the roads. GBT has always tried to stay up in safety & technology. We’ve never tried to be on the cutting edge of new technology, we’ve tried to stay with the new technology that has proven to work which you can count on to help you get safely down the road. The proof of the good work that you do in Safety at GBT is clearly shown in our CSA 2010 scores. Take a moment to read through our score in our newsletter and look at the scores of other carriers out there, you can see the difference and it is significant. Good work Team GBT. When it comes to Customer Service at GBT, the best ones to judge the work done in this area are our customers. They make a strong positive vote for Team GBT every time they place another order to move a load by Team GBT. Everyone makes a positive mark on Customer Service, whether it’s Charlie Sylvestre sorting out a bond and an ACE E-manifest or Chris Lesperance getting through traffic and weather to be on time for loading, everyone has a big role in Customer Service. Every time you take that extra step to ensure the job gets done you are helping to make superiour customer service at GBT a real thing. Creativity is something our customers enjoy when their loads deliver without issue because of the teamwork at GBT where people can change an idea into a solution to make the loading, transit or unloading process seamless. Whether it’s your comments on the tractors, trailers, valves, hoses, fittings, border crossings, customs clearances, every creative suggestion or idea you bring forward that improves transportation helps everyone to deliver on our Customer Service commitment at Team GBT. Keep bringing your ideas and suggestions forward, take that extra minute to help someone new get into a new groove at GBT. You are all helping deliver great customer service which keeps our customers coming back again and again. For some customers this goes back over 50 years.
