At Southwest , we know we are really a customerservice business that just happens to fly planes . Since our first flights in June of 1971 , Southwest has been known for providing excellent hospitality . We are not just concerned about your comfort and safety while in flight , we also take strides to improve the quality of life in the communities where our employees and customers live and work . To accomplish this goal , we have invested volunteer hours , financial and in-kind support to the San Diego community through relationships with more than 25 local non-profits . We have been committed to developing and championing relationships with organizations across San Diego who are committed to building resilient communities .
In honor of the 50th birthday , we launched the One Million Acts of Kindness initiative to continue the legacy of always acting with Heart . We are calling on our employees , customers , and friends to help make the world a better place . Joining in is easy . Spread kindness through something as simple as sharing a few kind words or buying someone a coffee to make their morning better , to a big gesture like donating Rapid Rewards ® points toward one of the charities in the Points for a Purpose program . We also made a Kindness Pledge to remind everyone that the little things can make a big difference . Each time someone takes the pledge , our tracker will be updated in hopes your kindness will inspire someone else . So far this year , thousands have signed and over 500,000 Acts of Kindness have been completed . With half the year to go and a passionate network of people willing to participate , we are sure to exceed our goal .
