Fleet Science Center CONNECTING EVERYONE TO SCIENCE

Putting science at the service of community is a common goal of the Fleet Science Center and Olivewood Gardens and Learning Center , who partnered with filmmaker Mary Ann Beyster , to celebrate the science of healthy eating and the chemistry of The Kitchenistas . This documentary tells the story of a passionate group of Latina immigrants in National City advocating for healthy food traditions .
Utilizing the Fleet Science Center ’ s recently upgraded Heikoff Giant Dome Theater , The Kitchenistas screening was followed by a bi-lingual panel discussion moderated by County Supervisor Nora Vargas and featuring , Mary Ann Beyster and Dr . Sabrina Falquier Montgrain , Patty Corona and Monica Lim who appear in the film . Among the many audience members were Kitchenistas , graduates of Olivewood Garden ’ s Cooking for Salud Program , and their families .
“ While The Kitchenistas continues to be shown on PBS stations and in festivals nation-wide , this was the first time a group of Kitchenistas had seen the film together and it was very special ,” Mary Ann Beyster shared with GB Magazine . In an effort to encourage greater Kitchenista attendance , the Fleet coordinated transportation to , and from , the event .
