WEST U.S. HIGHWAY
50 PASSING LANE
EXTENSION PROJECT
BEGINS
Special to The Gazette
Monday, a passing lane
extension project began on
a 1.4-mile stretch of U.S.
Highway 50 from 3,000
feet west of Road Z to
1,000 feet west of Road ZZ
(approximately nine miles
west of Emporia) in Chase
County.
Project work includes extending three
culvert boxes that run
under the existing roadway and widening this
section to four lanes. This
will create passing lanes in
both directions. Work will
take place during daylight
hours, Monday through
Friday, with some occasional Saturday work.
During construction for
the new eastbound lane,
traffic will be placed sideby-side and shifted onto
the north side (westbound
lanes) through the project
work zone.
Next, crews will begin
work to construct a new
westbound lane so traffic will be shifted onto
the south side (eastbound
lanes) through the project work zone. Advance
separate notification will
be sent for the remaining
phase of construction, including traffic impacts and
start and end dates.
Traffic will be directed
through the project work
zone via cones, delineators and signage. A pilot
car will be used at times.
There will be a 50 mph
posted speed limit and a
12-foot lane width restriction through the project
work zone for the duration.
The Kansas Department
of Transportation urges all
motorists to be alert, obey
the warning signs, and
“Give ‘Em a Brake!” when
approaching and driving
through the project work
zone.
This project is funded by
T-WORKS, the transportation program passed by the
Kansas Legislature in May
2010. Find out more about
this and other T-WORKS
projects at: http://kdotapp.ksdot.org/TWorks/.
