Jeremy Adkison of Emporia watched history in the making Tuesday evening as the roll call at the Democratic National Convention confirmed Sen . Hillary Clinton as the official presidential candidate .

there , and it was noticeably less contentious . The roll call vote was incredible . We stood together as a delegation and read our votes to the Secretary of the convention . It was aweinducing .
“ At the end Senator Sanders moved to nominate by acclamation , and we voted to do so . That was when it hit home , it was awe-inspiring . We nominated the first female candidate for president last night and put the greatest crack in that highest glass ceiling !” he said .
“ I was so proud of our campaign and our delegation .”

‘ Stinky ’ opening

Sertoma train rides
The Sertoma Club of Emporia operates the miniature train in Soden ’ s Grove four days a week . The schedule is 6:30 - 8:30 p . m . or dusk , Wednesday , Saturday and Sunday , and 9-11 a . m . Thursday . All are welcome .
Musicfest at EAC
New Life Christian Church will hold a Musicfest Night of Worship at 6:30 p . m . Friday at the Emporia Arts Center , 815 Commercial St . All are welcome , regardless of faith to this free event .
Since 2013 , the church , located at 1505 Road 175 , has held the evening of worship which is attended by several congregations . A free-will donation will be collected and donated to the Arts Council by way of thanks . Local praise bands are invited ; contact 785-221-5827 for more information .
County Commission meets
The Lyon County Commission will meet at 8 a . m . Thursday in the Courthouse , 430 Commercial St . The agenda includes establishing a yield sign at the intersection of Lakeshore and Bodock Road in Thorndale requiring traffic on Lakeshore Drive yield to traffic on Bodock Road and request to allow Noxious Weed to spray for poison ivy on the Cottonwood River Trail .
Advance voting open
Registered voters who wish to vote before the Aug . 2 primary may do so at the Lyon County Courthouse during office hours until noon Monday . Voters should bring a photo ID .
Preschool openings
The Learning Center Preschool is accepting enrollment applications for fall for openings in both the 3- and 4-yearold classes . Contact the office , 342-1582 , or download an application from the website at www . fccemporia . org and send or bring it into the office . Orientation is Aug . 22 and school begins on Aug . 29 .
Free swimming

Thanks to the Clint Bowyer 79 Fund via the Emporia Community Foundation , all children ages 15 and younger may swim for free at the Jones Aquatic Center Sunday - Aug . 7 . Pool hours are noon - 6 p . m . Monday - Thursday and noon - 8 p . m . Friday - Sunday . The aquatic center is at 4202 W . 18th Ave .
Credit class
The Salvation Army , Housing and Credit Counseling and United Way are providing a free class at 7 p . m . Thursday in the annex , 209 W . 4th Ave . “ Money and You and Budgeting ” assists participants in preparing a personal budget and how to use a budgeting tool .

Preschool enrollment
Enrollment applications are still being accepted for 3- and 4-year-old preschool classes at Maynard Early Childhood Center . Applications will be accepted from 8:30 a . m . to 4:30 p . m . Monday - Aug . 5 at the school , 19 Constitution St .
Maynard preschool offers half-day classes with certified teachers , and there is no cost to parents . Parents need to bring a birth certificate , immunization records , and record of a physical exam to complete enrollment . For more information , call the school at 341-2260 .

The Kansas State Department of Education has announced that all Kansas School Districts and many private schools have again elected to participate in the National school lunch and breakfast program . Local school officials have adopted the following household income guidelines for determining eligibility for Child Nutrition Program benefits :

Application forms and an informational letter to households are available from the school . Applications may be submitted at any time during the year . For the 2016-2017 school year , Emporia Public Schools served 61.7 percent of the student body with this program : 2,884 out of 4,767 enrollees .
Households receiving Food Assistance or Temporary Assistance to Families will be notified that their children will be provided free benefits unless the family chooses to decline benefits . Households receiving assistance under these programs should submit an application only if they aren ’ t notified of their eligibility by a specified date determined by the schools .
Participants in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women , Infants and Children may be eligible for reduced price or free benefits . Households with WIC participants should complete an application as described above .
Households with children who are enrolled in the Head Start Program or the Migrant Education Program or who are considered homeless or runaways by the school district ’ s homeless liaison should contact the school for assistance in receiving benefits .
Foster children that are under the legal responsibility of a state child welfare agency or court are eligible for free meals regardless of income . The state must retain legal custody of a child . Households will be notified that the foster child or children will be provided free benefits unless the household notifies the school that it chooses to decline benefits .
Households not receiving Food Assistance , TAF or FDPIR may apply for benefits by completing one application for all children in the household . The application must list names of everyone in the household , the amount of income each household member now receives , source of income , the last four digits of the Social Security number of the household member who signs the application or a statement that the household member doesn ’ t possess one and the signature of an adult household member certifying that the information provided is correct . The information is confidential and will be used only for the purpose of determining eligibility . The eligibility status may be verified at any time during the school year by school or other program officials .
If a household member becomes unemployed or if household size changes , the household should contact the school . Such changes may make the child in the household eligible for reduced price or free benefits if the household income falls at or below the levels shown above .
Each school ’ s office and / or the district ’ s / organization ’ s main office has a copy of the policy for reduced price and free benefits which may be reviewed by any interested party .
