Exhibitors wait to weigh their goats at the Gary Fuller Spring Classic .

YOUTH SHOWCASE LIVESTOCK AT GARY FULLER SPRING CLASSIC

Saturday was exhibition day at the Lyon County Fairgrounds as area youth presented their sheep , goats , cattle and pigs in the Gary Fuller Spring Classic .
Youth from ages seven to 18 had the opportunity to exhibit sheep , meat goats , market steers and heifers , breeding heifers and bucket calves as well as swine . Formerly known as the Lyon County Spring livestock show , the event was renamed after Fuller ’ s death .
“ Gary Fuller was a really great volunteer who passed away a couple of years ago ,” said Corinne Patterson , 4-H youth development extension agent for the K-State extension office in Lyon County . “ He was just the center of our program . He did so much for youth and cared so much about offering educational opportunities for our kids . ... He loved it and lived it and it ’ s been neat to honor him in this way .”
Hope Miller , a 7-year-old girl from Allen , exhibited two goats , named Taylor and Minnie , on Saturday . Hope said she was excited to participate in the event for the first time .
“ We came out last year but I wasn ’ t old enough to show and my sister showed ,” Hope said , adding why she thought her goats stood above the rest . “( My goats ) will play with me and kiss me on the nose .”

According to Patterson , the show helps exhibitors by giving them an idea of what the market looks for in livestock .
“ We do hire a professional to judge and evaluate ,” she said . “ It ’ s one person ’ s opinion but it ’ s important to have industry people come in and say what the industry is looking for .”

Overall , Patterson stressed that the main goal of the show was having fun .
“ Going to a spring show and being involved in a livestock show is about the fun ,” she said . “ We all think about the purple ribbons and the trophies and all of those things , but in reality it ’ s all about the bond between you and your animal .”

“ It ’ s a good place to get away from where I live in the city , and meet people from all over the world .”
Like many who have been through Camp Wood , Cassady said that after this summer , she will become a counselor at the camp .
This is her junior year at Blue Valley High School , and she is all set to work as a volunteer for her last time before becoming a counselor . She says the experience each year has meant a lot to her .
“ Here you can just be yourself ,” Cassady said . “ You can just completely be you . It ’ s nice to have people to support you from all over the world . I ’ ve made lifetime friends here , I just want everyone that comes here to have a good time in their own way .”

Cassady return is the most rewarding part of his job .
“ The highlights are always the campers ,” Wold said . “ Every year it ’ s a new group and every year it ’ s personal and different . That makes it worthwhile .”
As Wold reflected on the centennial and his own two decades as director , he said that he was happy to see all of the former and current campers come back for a visit to relive their summers from years gone by .
“ I sit in the office and see people passing through that were campers in the past ,” Wold said . “ They ’ ll tell me about their trip … that one week they spent at Camp Wood YMCA 30 or 40 years later … it tells me that the camp had a big impact on their life . The hope is that the campers we have now will have the same experience . We hope that impact lasts for the rest of their lives .”
