A NEW LID FOR THE FOOD PANTRY

Thanks to an $ 8,000 grant from the Trusler Fund last fall , the C4 Food Pantry in Strong City has a new roof , guttering and some foundation work to ensure the goods inside stay dry .
The pantry consistently serves about families and individuals each month , and director Shannon Foxen said the updates were part of a continual blessing .
“ It means that our pantry is dry and stable ,” Foxen said . “ We have a good home now ; we don ’ t have to worry about the roof leaking . It ’ s a relief , now we can focus on other things .”
Another project coming up is a new coat of paint . A private donor gave several gallons and supplies for the interior .
Foxen hopes to gather some volunteers this summer to get that work done , and any materials would be appreciated .

The pantry will also be starting the backpack program this fall . This sends food home with low-income children to eat over the weekend while they ’ re not in school .
“ We ’ re in the process of getting everything together for that ,” Foxen said . “ Keep an eye out , that will be a great opportunity to help the kids in Chase County .”
With the support of local residents , the pantry is able to serve those in need , and Foxen said she is as grateful as others .
“ The continued support of the community has been amazing ,” Foxen said . “ We really appreciate everything they do for us . Without them we wouldn ’ t be able to do what we do .”

SUMMER A GOOD TIME TO BRUSH UP ON CARBON MONOXIDE SAFETY

As summer approaches , so do the possibility of summer storms and power outages .
When turning to a backup power source , it is important to make sure there is proper ventilation to avoid the build up of carbon monoxide .
CO is an odorless , tasteless and invisible gas , which causes flu-like symptoms . People suffering from CO poisoning will feel dizzy , sleepy , nauseated and develop blurred vision and headaches .
According to the Centers for Disease Control , more than 400 Americans die from unintentional carbon monoxide poisoning each year ; more than 20,000 visit the emergency room and more than 4,000 are hospitalized due to CO poisoning .

Triathalon registration open
The Flint Hills Triathlon , hosted by the FHTC Wellness Committee , is scheduled for Saturday , Sept . 17 . Registration is live at fhtc . edu , with early-bird pricing available through Aug . 26 . The event will include gravel racing during the biking portion , swimming at Emporia High and will begin and end at Flint Hills Technical College . More details will be announced at a later date .

Emporia Fire Marshall Reason Bradford said CO is produced any time fuel is burned . Bradford said a CO alarm should be placed in the home to help warn against CO leaks .
“ We recommend they put ( a CO detector ) on every sleeping level ,” Bradford said . “ A lot of people put them in their basement thinking ‘ that ’ s where my furnace and water heater are so that ’ s where the problem will be ,’ but if you ’ re asleep and on the second floor you won ’ t hear that detector go off downstairs .”
Bradford said the average cost of a CO detector is $ 20 and the lifespan on them can run short so it is important to check to make sure they ’ re still active . A recommended practice is to check them when the smoke detectors are checked — each time the Daylight Savings time changes occur .
Cooler temperatures and light rain have officials optimistic they ’ ve reached a turning point on getting a handle on a massive wildfire that has devastated parts of Canada ’ s oil sands town of Fort Mc- Murray .
Alberta Premier Rachel Notley said the battle against the fire has stabilized to the point where she can visit and begin the next phase of the government ’ s operation to determine what must be done to eventually allow

RAIN GIVES FIREFIGHTERS HOPE IN CANADA

Emporia police said they found no evidence of an intruder after a shooting incident occurred near Neosho Rapids late Saturday night .
Deputies and first responders from both Emporia and Hartford-Neosho Rapids were called to 1595 Road W , about one mile north of be held at 11 a . m . Wednesday at Charter Funerals with a graveside service to follow at Union Cemetery . Charter Funerals has the arrangements .
James W . Fraley , 77 , passed away peacefully in hospice care on April 29 , 2016 with family by his side .
Jim was born June 26 , 1938 in White Plains , NY to Evelyn and James E . Fraley . He graduated from Sewanhaka High School on Long Island , NY as a distinguished athlete . He furthered his education and athletic career as a standout collegiate basketball player and graduated with a teaching degree from Emporia State Teachers College in Emporia , KS . Upon graduating college , he volunteered in the Peace Corp and was stationed in the Philippines for two years . He was a teacher , principal , and superintendent of schools for over 30 years , spanning in districts across Germany , New York , Montana , and Kansas . Jim was most recently employed with Peoria Sports Complex for many years and loved to help others enjoy spring training baseball games . He enjoyed tennis , golf , fishing , and collecting a variety of historical artifacts including model railroad cars . He also found a passion for writing and became a published author of several books . In 1961 he was drafted by the Kansas City Steers of the Professional American Basketball Association but chose his career in education . In 1987 Jim was inducted into the Emporia State University Wall of Honor for his accomplishments in basketball . In 2012 , ESU retired his basketball jersey in dedication to his commitment to Hornet Basketball . His # 14 jersey hangs from the rafters of the William L . White Auditorium as a testament of his accomplishments as a student and athlete .
Jim is survived by his wife , Linda of Peoria , AZ ; children , James R . ( Katie ) of Cheyenne , WY and Jill of Loveland , CO ; brother , William ( Barbara ); six grandchildren , Nicholas , Riley , Claire , Nora , Ella , and Umer Fraley . He was preceded in death by his twin sister , Mary . Many who remember Jim will raise a bottle of Pepsi in his honor for his many years as a devoted son , brother , husband , father , and grandfather who loved sports , education of youth , friends , and his family .
A gathering of family and friends will be Wednesday , May 11 , at 1:00 pm , at Sunland Mortuary , 15826 Del Webb Blvd .,

According to Sgt . Dan Evans with the Emporia Police Department , the homeowner thought he heard an intruder on his property and fired his shotgun to ward them off before calling authorities to investigate . Evans said there was no evidence found of any intruder .
