Friday Injury Accident

One man was taken to Newman Regional Health Friday night after an injury accident in northeast Emporia . At about 8:26 p . m ., a pickup truck left the roadway on Weaver Street , crashed through a fire hydrant , traveled through two yards before coming to a rest horizontally in a nearby driveway . No other information was available when this edition of The Emporia Gazette went to press .

grassroots effort picked up steam — particularly on social media . With about a week to go , it jolted to No . 2 in the poll and , eventually , to the top spot . That is where it stayed right until the end .
That says a lot about the spirit of Emporia , according to Frey .
“ It means that the idea that , ‘ We have the best Main Street ’ has really resonated across the community ,” she said . “ It means that Main Street is a rallying cry .”
Frey said she has visited Emporia once and remembers a few things sticking out relative to other communities .
“ What struck me about Casey and the overall effort of the community was how focused they were on economic development ,” she said . “ The collection of events they were bringing to downtown was phenomenal . What set Emporia apart was the hard work they were putting in to attracting businesses to downtown and the fact they were bringing housing to downtown . That ’ s becoming more and more of a driver of health to downtown areas .”
There is no monetary or physical prize in winning the contest , but both Woods and Frey said a victory comes with plenty of benefits nonetheless .
“ What a great lead-in when we ’ re talking to a potential business thinking about coming to town ,” Woods said . “ We can say , ‘ How would you like to be a part of the No . 1 Main Street in the United States ?’
“ We ’ ve been caught up in the metrics of , how to create more business , how to help our businesses , improving events in town ; those are the metrics we look at . We don ’ t seek recognition like this . We seek tangible results in those areas that help us receive this kind of recognition .”
“ It means a couple of things ,” Frey said . “ It puts Emporia on the map for anyone outside the area who is looking for that authentic , hometown experience . I see it as a big win and as a sign of tremendous pride in the community . It ’ s something that the whole town should take pride in .”
The feeling in the Main Street office on Fifth Avenue was more of relief than jubilation when the results came in Friday morning . Although the employees were without a doubt excited for the win , there is still much work to be done . They will , however , take a moment to celebrate as part of Midnight Madness

Still , the victory was hardly a sign that everything is perfect .
“ We want more wins ,” Woods said . “ We want to use this to create more tangible improvements to our community . This is not the finish line . This is the starting line to creating even better things in the future .”
