US GIVING $ 48 MILLION TO HELP WESTERN FARMS HANDLE DROUGHT

BRIGHTON , COLORA- DO — The Obama administration is announcing $ 48 million in grants to help farmers and ranchers in the West conserve water and energy amid drought and climate change .

Agriculture Secretary

Tom Vilsack is scheduled to discuss the plan Thursday in Colorado . The Agriculture Department says the effort will include 76 projects in at least 11 states .

The department says the program will include improving irrigation systems .

The grants will come from both the Agriculture and Interior departments .

Dorine Harter conducted the recent initiations for Mary Ann Law , Bonnie Denson and Ralphie Hill into the Altrusa organization of Emporia .

“ Each of these ladies brings a wealth of knowledge about community involvement and service , and each brings good leadership skills to the club ,” said member Bev Miller , who sponsored all three members . “ Ralphie is a former college instructor and service club volunteer . Mary Ann has served in the medical profession , and devoted many years to volunteer service at Newman Regional Health . Bonnie is well-known in the community for her culinary skills , artistic design , and volunteer service to many organizations .”

Altrusa International is a global volunteer service organization . The local organization belongs to district eight , which includes Kansas , Missouri , Arkansas and Oklahoma . Members promote better communities through a network of people with diverse backgrounds and experiences . Altrusa ’ s mission is to promote the betterment of women and improve literacy for everyone through service and financial resources . An Altrusan will say : “ We make our communities better through leadership , patriotism , partnership and service .”

Road closure

BNSF has notified the county that they will be closing Road N from Road 170 south to South Avenue , effective 7 a . m Monday . The crossing should reopen at 4 p . m . Thursday .

Corky ’ s Summer Nurse Camp

July 1 is the registration deadline for the Emporia State University Department of Nursing ’ s Corky ’ s Summer Nurse Camp , to be held July 22 . For ages 10 - 12 , students will learn what it ’ s like to be a nurse and be introduced to CPR , sterile techniques , vital signs , infection control and have a tour of Newman Regional Health .
