Mural

large from the small preliminary drawings we did . We used a grid and a technique that goes back in time . We started doing three-by-nine inch drawings . The final size of the mural on the wall is 8-by-24 feet .”
The mural is multi-colored and includes a set of eyes , a rainbow of colors , a police officer , two hands and a sunflower .
Sloane Dyer , a sophomore art therapy student from Topeka , talked about what the different parts of the mural represented to her .
“ The eyes show that we need to see beyond color ,” she said . “ The rainbow also represents that . The officer in the mural is there to remind the officers in this building that they took an oath to protect and serve and they can ’ t overuse their powers because they will be held responsible . The statue of the blind justice represents an impartial judge . She has the scales on one side and the sword on the other , showing that you can ’ t judge someone based on skin color or ethnicity .
“ The blue hand is the officer ’ s hand and the multi-colored hand is the community . This shows how they need to be in perfect unison . The sunflower represents the growth of the community .”
Sadie Hutchison , senior painting major from Wellington , said the design process of the project was overwhelming at first with so many ideas from the other students involved . The class had to put those ideas together and make them work .
“ So many things went into this mural ,” she said . “ We wanted the view to be simple , yet complex and visibly appealing to those who notice it .
“ As a painting major , I really enjoyed this project . My artistic skills really developed throughout this project in different ways . Chief Cronk was so great throughout the process . He would come by each day and was always excited to see how much our mural had changed throughout the days and how it progressed .”
Wilkinson said the main benefit for his class was working together during the collaboration process .
“ In my painting classes , pretty much all of my assignments are individual projects for students to work on their own in a variety of styles and mediums ,” he said . “ With that , they just think about their own designs . With this they had to give up their personal ownership of any personal idea or design . Any of those thoughts and ideas they had became community property for the whole class to use .”
Hutchison agreed the project taught new lessons , especially during the collaboration process .
“ I was really excited to have a different opportunity like this ,” she said . “ It ’ s not something that we ’ ve ever done before in the painting department . Glass blowing is a team project and this was different . Painting is more individual work and so this has been fun in that we got to work with other people . They all have different skillsets and styles and we got to mix them all together .”
Only the beginning
Wilkinson said there has been a lot of interest in murals in the Emporia area recently . One of the goals for his class was to develop a group of trained students who can go out and take on more mural projects around town .
“ I am very thankful the police department allowed us to do this ,” he said . “ Chief Cronk has been so open and has treated us so well . I think some of the students will want to stay or come back . It ’ s been a good collaboration . This process has been very rewarding for me . I am proud of what the students have been able to do . I think the project has allowed them to gain a new confidence . I hear a lot of them talking now about wanting to do another project like this in the future .”
The class is currently working on a mission statement , which will explain the meaning depicted in the mural .
“ Others will be able to see the mural , read the statement and know what were trying to convey through our art ,” Dyer said . “ Hopefully , we will be able to change some perspectives and make people think . It ’ s nice to be able to represent all of those things through one piece of artwork . There are a lot of important messages behind this mural . I think the message is much more powerful than we initially thought it would be and it ’ s turned into something bigger than all of us . I liked being a part of something bigger than myself .”
Cronk said it was a great experience to be able to work with ESU students and have their creativity be a part of the Emporia Police Department .
“ The students are a big part of the community and it ’ s nice to do these things together ,” he said . “ We let these creative students take over and that ’ s what they came up with for us . The finished mural is fantastic and is so much more than I could have ever hoped for .”

sas — especially compared to other states that made different choices . Kansas struggles to keep afloat while other states swim laps around us .”
Children living in highpoverty areas and children living in single-parent families have also increased . Yet there have been decreases in the number of teens using alcohol or drugs and the number of teen births .
One area that Kansas children have improved

Samuels

Greenwood County . The return is also “ bittersweet ” to Samuels , as his father , Matt Samuels , was killed in the line of duty in 2005 .
“ When you see somebody that you idolize — like my dad — in the position that he was in and how other people look at him , well it ’ s something I want to reach for myself ,” he said . “ I ’ m kind of a fourth-generation law enforcement officer , to go back home to Greenwood County is what means a lot to me .”
Samuels arrived in Emporia as a transfer student to Emporia State University from Washburn University , seeking a degree in crime and delinquency studies . He went on to work in a variety of roles at the Lyon County Sheriff ’ s Office .
“ I worked my way up through all the different ranks ,” he said . “ Trying to figure out and learn the different aspects of each job position .” is health . The number of children with health insurance has increased and the number of low-birthweight babies has decreased . The number of child deaths has also decreased , with 216 deaths of children under the age of 18 reported .
Kansas Action for Children said many of the decreases in child well-being can be attributed to the reduction of safety net services for the most vulnerable individuals in our state .
“ Kansas investments in early childhood health and education have largely stagnated or declined since

the Great Recession , which ended years ago ,” McKay said . “ Unfortunately , instead of re-investing in important programs like early childhood education and expanding access to the safety net for Kansas ’ most vulnerable kids , policymakers weakened the safety net , repeatedly cut or swept funding for the Children ’ s Initiatives Fund , and diminished the state revenue stream , making Kansas families even more vulnerable and economically fragile . Kansas ’ overall decline is a direct reflection of those choices .”
“ Lyon County has been awesome to me . I can ’ t think of a better place to start a career . They ’ ve made me into the officer I am today .”
Lyon County Undersheriff John Koelsch said Samuels will do a “ fine job ” as sheriff .
“ He ’ ll do a fine job ,” Koelsch said . “ We ’ re sorry to see him go , but this is a career move for him that has been in his plans for a long time .”
Nominated by the Greenwood County Republicans , Samuels will face three other candidates for the position : Jared Helkenberg , Matt Clemons and Jason Myers . All three currently work in the Greenwood Sheriff ’ s Office .
The citizens of Greenwood County will decide on one of the four during the Aug . 2 primaries .
