HEALTH CENTER RECEIVES
GRANT TO CONTINUE
BREASTFEEDING
PROGRAM
Special to The Gazette
Flint Hills Community
Health Center has received
a $3,000 support grant to
continue its work promoting breastfeeding in the
community.
The grant, which comes
from the United Methodist Health Ministry Impact
Funding Team, will allow
the Women, Infants and
Children program to focus
on increasing breastfeeding knowledge, identifying and encouraging social
supports, and building
mothers’ breastfeeding
confidence.
“This grant will allow
us to continue to increase
the number of women and
infants participating in our
program in Lyon, Chase
and Coffey counties,” said
Janine Messersmith, WIC
manager. “It will also help
us to encourage women to
breastfeed their babies and
give them the tools they
need to meet their personal breastfeeding goals.”
The WIC staff members will encourage mothers to consider exclusive
breastfeeding, help them
understand the benefits,
and provide greater access to counseling with an
International Board Certified Lactation Consultant.
They will use a model that
addresses both a mother’s
motivation and ability to
succeed at breastfeeding
on personal, social, and
structural levels.
“If the mothers don’t understand the importance of
breastfeeding or don’t believe they can do it, they
can’t succeed,” Messersmith said. “We want to
use proven methods to support mothers personally, as
well as through their social
support system, workplaces, etc.”
Messersmith said the
grant helps by providing
a survey that is predictive
of a mother’ 2'&V7FfVVF
