The Emporia Gazette
Monday is the annual
Emporia Area Habitat for
Humanity benefit concert: “A
Lord Built House.” It will be
held at First United Methodist
Church, 827 Merchant St., at 7
p.m. Admission is a suggested
donation of $10, however, all
are welcome.
The concert will feature
the Emporia Community
Chorus, Emporia High School
chorale, Viva Voce and Emporia State University cellist
Hector Rodriguez.
“Our purpose continues to
be to build homes with families and to sell the homes at no
profit and no interest to those
families who could not otherwise afford a home,” states
Habitat Vice-president Jim
Kessler. “We believe in giving these families a ‘hand up’
rather than a ‘hand out.’”
Ron Thomas will serve
as emcee and provide information about Habitat for
Humanity in between performances. Habitat President
Kirby Smith will speak on the
organization’s latest activities
and the most recent person
to receive a home will speak
about her experience as a new
home owner. The grand finale
will bring all of the groups together to sing “A Lord Built
House.”
Habitat for Humanity builds homes for families
that might not be able to
otherwise afford one. These
homes are not gifts, as the
homeowner must pay for the
house through a 20-year mortgage, however, no interest is
charged. Organizers state that
Habitat homes are simple,
comfortable homes that utilize voluntary labor and materials so they can be built at
reasonable prices. Homeowners are expected to provide
300 hours of “sweat equity”
while the home is being built.
“Over half of our partner
families have school-age children and it has been proven
that their grades improved
once they moved into their
new Habitat home,” said Kessler. “We have chosen to build
in established, older neighborhoods so that area might
be improved. Once a Habitat
home is built, it seems the adjoining neighbors fix up their
homes also, so the whole
neighborhood looks better.”
Emporia Habitat for Humanity welcomes anyone that
might be interested in serving on the board of directors,
a committee or helping build
the next home. Construction
on the 18th home will begin
this spring and anyone that
would like to volunteer can
contact Jim Kessler at Modern Air, 106 Commercial St.
or call 342-7577.
