The basilica of Notre Dame de la Garde
watches over Marseilles
True symbol of the city, Marseilles is affectionately referred to as “The good mother“
by its residents. Overlooking the whole city, it is said that the basilica watches over
sailors and fishermen. Several chapels preceded its construction. The hill of La
Garde therefore has a triple vocation : a lookout post, a military function, a place
of worship and pilgrimage. In the middle of the 19th century, the sanctuary was
found to be too small to accommodate all the pilgrims and so Monseigneur de
Mazenod decided to build the large basilica of Notre Dame de la Garde. The first
stone was laid on September 11, 1853, the construction is carried out by architect
Henry Espérandieu and completed on June 5, 1864. We can admire its bell tower
built in Roman-Byzantine style, on which stands an 11,2 meters high statue of the
Virgin and Child. Its colour comes from its gilded copper skin.
