The Fauna and Flora of Palestine” (1884): “Family Upupidae : Upupa epops. Linn. Syst. Nat. i., p. 183. Hoopoe. Arab. ‫هدهد‬ Hudhud (from its cry). The Hoopoe, which leaves Palestine in winter, returns in the beginning of March; not seen in flocks, but suddenly spread over the whole country in pairs or in small parties.
