Because of the heavy industrialisation and the intense urban migration the world has been facing in the last few decades, many cities have undergone unplanned developments. Although the quality of life has been significantly improved in the recent past, the above strategies have challenged the sustainable evolution of the densely populated areas. The concept of smart cities has emerged as a consequence of the attempt to solve urban problems around the globe.

With a multitude of next generation wireless technologies such as Li-fi, 5G, LoRa and network slicing being developed alongside the emergence of IoT( Internet of Things), the experience of large towns and cities is set to be enhanced considerably under the smart city concept. It is very crucial that these wireless technologies are developed promptly to provide the infrastructure for the diverse aspects of smart cities such as assured water and electricity supply, clean and renewable energy, smart grids, intelligent traffic control, efficient urban mobility and public transport, robust IT connectivity, waste management, safety and security of the citizens etc..
The existing mobile and wireless infrastructure such as 3G and 4G which came before the real inception of IoT( Internet of Things) and smart devices lag considerably when it comes to the realisation of needs of the complex networks associated with smart cities. Therefore, these technologies should be developed further so that they are capable of catering for the various requirements effectively and efficiently. Network slicing is one of the key capabilities that will enable flexibility, as it allows multiple logical networks to be created on top of a common shared physical network, thereby supporting the numerous and different services envisaged in 5G. Network slicing is expected to play a critical role in 5G networks because of the diversity of use cases and new services that 5G will support. Here, a single physical network will be sliced into multiple virtual networks that can support different access networks. So, it can be primarily used to partition the core network.
