Waste generation can happen in many ways in many plac- es. Mainly waste is generated in households, industry, in Construction and demolition, in Municipal services, in treatment plant sites, in agricultural lands as bio degradable waste (organic waste; food, garden waste and paper), non - bio degradable waste (Polythene & Plastic, Textile and Rubber, Glass and Metal) and as hazardous or non – hazardous waste. Therefore, it is clear by the little amount of garbage generated at our homes, by the little amount of paper discarded from our institutions we, ultimately contribute for the growth of such gar- bage mountains like Meethotamulla. In order to minimize this, what measures can we take?? • • • packs, and single-serve containers. Purchase items such as dish soap and laun- dry detergents in concentrate forms. Reduce the amount of unwanted mail or let- ters you receive. Buy items made of recycled content, and use and reuse them as much as you can. There are also proper ways of recovering energy from waste and proper ways of disposal of waste too. But it is very essential to be aware that these methods are for the waste that are collected after following the hierarchy of waste minimization. • On-site (at home) treatment (Composting) • Sanitary Landfill • Incineration • Ocean dumping • Pyrolysis HIERARCHY OF WASTE MINIMIZATIONS Mainly, to mainly prevent the waste minimization, The 3R con- cept is used to prevent the waste minimization. • • • Reduce Reuse Recycle Source - www.kulturverk.com Obviously as the first step, we should try to generate less amount of garbage as far as possible. In that matter, we could start to, • • • • • • Use reusable bags and containers when shopping, trav- eling or packing. Use products that are returnable, reusable, or refillable over single-use items. Compost food scraps and yard waste. Many types of food scraps, along with leaves and yard trimmings (gar- den waste), can be combined to form compost.
