INTERVIEW WITH
DR. ROSHAN RAGEL
When students finish their graduation, they leave the country in search of better
jobs, best salaries, and a comfortable life. They tend to forget their roots. But there
are a very few students who stay here in Sri Lanka to do what they really love to
do. There was a student in the E96 batch of the Faculty of Engineering, the University of Peradeniya who loved teaching. After graduation, he became a lecturer.
T
his is an interview I did with
that student, Dr. Roshan
Ragel, a senior lecturer at
the Department of Computer
Engineering.
Sir, first of all, I would like to know your full name?
Roshan Ragel is enough.
Then your hometown?
That’s a difficult question actually. Why it is a difficult question is because I lived in
different places. But I’m born in Jaffna.
Sir, can I know about your education? About where did you had primary education and then A/L?
Primary was in Jaffna, and I did my A/L in Vavuniya Central College. It is in Tamil medium, and that was in 1995.
Sir, I believe you had excellent results in A/L. So why did you
choose Peradeniya University?
Okay that’s a good question. Why I chose Peradeniya. I took Peradeniya as a university
in those days compared to Colombo. One thing I didn’t like Colombo, particularly that
rush and the weather in Colombo I don’t like that. I did schooling in Colombo for one
year for O/L because of the problems in the North and didn’t like there. Also, there
was a strong feeling like if we want to go to a University, we have to go Peradeniya.
Now there’s less that feeling but those days it was more.
And Sir, why especially Computer Engineering? Why did you choose
computer Engineering? And what is your batch?
Its 96, E96 batch. And why Computer? So this is what has happened. Our batch was
the first batch that got into the department. So what happened was, the department
was already there, but it was a service department like the present Department of
Engineering Mathematics. When we were in the third year, they have decided to start
Computer Engineering as a separate stream and the obvious choice for the department of Computer Engineering to offer the specialization. So in the 3rd year when
