Gatsby Times v.1 | Page 4

I watched him as he listened to the orchestra play the music. He seemed like a decent guy, dressed nicely and sober. We were at a gigantic party filled with excitement and amazing people. I saw some celebrity’s, some of the wealthiest men in all of New York, and even some random men and women who just came to the party to enjoy it. However, this one man was different from them all. Here we were at the party of Jay Gatsby on June 22, 1922, and this man was the only person in the entire mansion that had an actual invitation. He seemed like he was enjoying his time at the party, but he appeared slightly upset that the host hadn’t come to talk to him yet. I was told to get a story of the interesting people at Gatsby’s party and without a doubt in my mind, he was interesting. I sat down next to him and said, “Hello young man,” and he answer, “Why, hello sir.” I then asked the seemingly ordinary man “If you would forgive my asking, what is your name?” He looked at me and answered, “I am called Nick Carraway, it is a pleasure to make your acquaintance.”

Question: What did you think about the Great War?

Answer: Actually, I fought in it. It was a dreadful terrible experience. After the war, I was restless on most nights because I was waiting to get raided. The war has stuck with me, it is a part of me now.

Question: What family do you come from?

Answer: I am a member of the Carraways. We are a wealthy family from out west, actually we are a clan that is in control of a wholesale hardware business and it keeps the family well off.

Question: Are you fond of any members of the family?

Answer: Well, I have a cousin here in New York that I care for deeply. My cousin Daisy is a wonderful woman, she lives over in East Egg with her husband, Tom Buchanan, perhaps you have heard of him. Well, she and Tom are going through some issues right now so I am unsure of how life will turn out for her; however, she acts on her own and has a child that I haven’t seen very much of. I do hope that Tom will still love Daisy, I don’t want her to get hurt.

Question: Earlier I saw you talking with Jordan Baker, the golfer. May I ask how the two of you are related?

Answer: I actually met Jordan through Daisy. The two of them are very close friends and I am quite glad that I got to know her. She is a lovely person who is intelligent and kind. I enjoy her company very much because she is truly a fantastic person.

Question: What do you think about the rumors circulating around about Jay Gatsby?

Answer: Well, I assume he can’t be too terrible of a man; however, I haven’t met him yet so I can’t make assumptions. He invited me to his party and I would actually like to meet the man before I judge him, but at the moment he doesn’t appear to be quite the most fantastic guy.
