Chasing Storms
Mike Olbinski
Based in Phoenix,
Arizona, USA, Mike
is a professional
photographer specialising
in storm chasing and,
far less tempestuous,
wedding photography.
A strange combination
for sure, but one that
provides endless
inspiration and
challenges. His photos
and time-lapse work have
been seen around the
world, published in
magazines and print, plus
commercials,
documentaries and films,
such as Thor: The Dark
World and the North
America series on The
Discovery Channel.

Berbasis di Phoenix,
Arizona, Mike adalah
fotografer profesional
dengan spesialisasi
foto-foto badai, dan foto
pernikahan yang jauh
lebih kecil tantangannya.
Satu kombinasi yang aneh
memang, tapi ini
memberikan inspirasi dan
tantangan yang tak ada
habisnya. Foto-foto dan
karya time lapse-nya
telah dilihat di seluruh
dunia, diterbitkan di
majalah dan media cetak
lainnya, serta dipakai
dalam iklan, dokumenter
dan film, seperti Thor:
The Dark World dan
serial North America
di Discovery Channel.
Storms have fascinated me since
the beginning of my life. From a
small child seeing a blinding bolt
of lightning to a grown adult watching
the radar every afternoon hoping
for storms to move into town, weather
has always been a part of me.
However, it wasn’t until my early 30s that something
clicked; I picked up a camera and started taking photos.
I was obsessed with looking at lightning images online,
so that’s what I wanted to try first. I started chasing
storms further and further from my home, eventually
spreading to the central plains of the USA. My work has
evolved to include time-lapse photography, and my
goals every year are to capture amazing photos of storms
and to make small films that show the motion and
power of weather. Choosing just six images to share is
difficult, but all these photos are near and dear to my
heart. This is why I chase storms.
Cuaca selalu menjadi bagian dalam
hidup saya, dari seorang anak kecil
yang melihat kilatan petir menyilaukan,
sampai ketika dewasa saya memantau
radar setiap sore berharap ada badai
yang bergerak ke kota.
Namun, baru di usia 30-an awal saya menyadari
sesuatu. Saya mengambil kamera dan mulai memotret.
Saya terobsesi melihat foto-foto petir di internet, jadi
itulah yang ingin saya coba pertama kali. Saya mulai
berburu badai bahkan hingga ke dataran tengah AS.
Karya saya pun berkembang meliputi fotografi
time-lapse, dan target saya setiap tahun adalah
menangkap foto badai dan membuat film pendek
tentang pergerakan serta kekuatan alam. Sulit
memilih enam foto saja untuk dibagikan, tapi semua
ini adalah foto-foto yang paling berarti buat saya.
Inilah alasan kenapa saya berburu badai.
The Booker Supercell
On June 3rd, 2013, we flew into Denver, Colorado,
and drove to Kansas to catch up with some storms that
fired early in the afternoon. We made mistakes along
the way, turning left when we should have gone right,
not stopping for gas until it was too late, you name it.
But we finally got on track and when we did eventually
get a clear view to our west, our jaws dropped. A
gorgeous supercell over a freshly harvested cornfield
with the sun casting an eerie, orange glow in the
background. It was unlike anything I'd seen before.
akhirnya semua berjalan sesuai rencana. Kami berhasil
merekam pemandangan badai supercell di atas ladang
jagung habis panen dengan latar belakang matahari
yang memancarkan sinar jingga.
