The Community Services Division is led by a lieutenant and includes the Community Engagement Unit, School Resource Officer Unit, Traffic Safety Unit, Animal Services Officer, Volunteer Police Chaplains, and Internship program.
The School Resource Officer( SRO) Unit is comprised of a sergeant and six SROs. The SROs patrol our middle and high schools, collaborating with students and staff to ensure a safe learning environment. These SROs partner with the school and work to educate, mentor, and enforce laws. Our effective SRO program has been in place since 1993.
The Community Engagement Unit features one sergeant and one community liaison officer. The unit organizes community outreach programs in various locations throughout the area. Local businesses and other civic groups have joined the Garner Police Department to support our community.
The Traffic Safety Unit is responsible for investigating traffic crashes, addressing traffic complaints, conducting traffic studies and analyses, and managing traffic control during major events such as the Christmas Parade and the Town’ s annual July 3rd Independence Day Celebration. All Traffic Safety Officers undergo advanced training in crash investigation and strive to provide educational services to the community through programs like the seatbelt emphasis initiative( Click It or Ticket), DWI enforcement( Booze It and Lose It), BikeSafe, and anti-texting or distracted driving campaigns on the road and in our high schools. Several traffic safety and patrol officers are certified in crash reconstruction, investigating incidents that involve serious injuries or fatalities.
The volunteer police chaplain program consists of three volunteer clergy members who assist the department by facilitating various tasks between the community and the Police Department.
The animal services officer is responsible for investigating all cases of animal bites, cruelty, and complaints about stray animals.
Criminal Investigations Division
Our officers are constantly working to build strong, positive relationships with students in Garner schools.
A lieutenant oversees the Criminal Investigation Division, including a General Investigation Unit and a Special Investigation Unit.
The General Investigation Unit manages most felony crime investigations reported to the Garner Police Department, including burglaries, robberies, fraud, and violent assaults. This unit comprises a sergeant, a corporal, and four investigators.
The Special Investigation Unit manages sexual assaults, crimes against children, drug, and organized crime cases. This unit comprises a sergeant, two drug investigators, a special victim investigator, and an internet crimes against children investigator( ICAC).
