Citizens and Police Together( CAPT)
Citizens and Police Together( CAPT) is a volunteer group composed of Citizens’ Police Academy graduates willing to volunteer their time to give back to their community. The CAPT mission statement is,“ The goal of the Citizens and Police Together team is to partner with the officers and support personnel to provide extra assistance as needed, to be a positive influence, and to return a service to the citizens of Garner that will make a great community even greater.” CAPT consists of 11 volunteers and helps with such events as Child ID stations, the July 3rd Celebration, National Night Out, annual parades, and other events as needed.
Barber Shop Rap Sessions
The Garner Police Department has partnered with local barber shops and beauty salons to foster connections between law enforcement and communities of color. The barber shop rap sessions seek to foster relationships with multicultural community members by engaging in dialogue about community and police-related issues. We intend to continue this initiative with our current barber shops and beauty salons as we expand to additional locations, collaborate with various community partners, and build a stronger, more inclusive community for the residents of Garner.
Civic Organizations
Members of the Garner Police Department participate as volunteers, leaders, and officers in several civic organizations in the town, including the Civitan Club, Optimist Club, Garner Educational Foundation, and Rotary Club. Many employees also act as volunteer coaches and mentors in local sports leagues and after-school programs.
Being a member of these organizations helps our personnel and community members build stronger connections outside standard police interactions. It also enables our employees to showcase community leadership beyond their roles in the police department.
Garner PAAL
Citizens and Police Together volunteers help with a number of Town of Garner events including the annual Christmas Parade.
The Garner Police Athletic / Activities League( PAAL) is a youth crime prevention program that uses educational, athletic, and recreational activities to foster trust and understanding between police officers and young people. It is founded on the belief that if young people are engaged early enough, they can develop strong positive attitudes toward police officers as they grow toward maturity and good citizenship. Garner PAAL places youth under the supervision and positive influence of a law enforcement agency, while also enhancing public awareness about the role of police officers and reinforcing the responsible values and attitudes instilled in young people by their parents.
