Community Involvement

Community Policing

Community policing reflects our philosophy and organizational strategy that fosters a partnership between citizens and their police force, focusing on problem-solving and crime prevention. It is founded on the belief that both the police and the community must collaborate to identify, prioritize, and address contemporary issues such as:
• Crime,
• The fear of crime,
• Social and physical disorders,
• Overall neighborhood decay, and
• Improving the overall quality of life.
Community policing in Garner involves everything we do daily as law enforcement officers and employees. Whether engaged in education, enforcement, partnerships, prevention, or problemsolving, we adhere to the community policing philosophy.

Community Involvement

The Garner Police Department is dedicated to engaging our employees and the Department in community activities and outreach to foster and maintain strong relationships with the people we serve.
The Department was involved with the following activities, programs, and projects in 2024:
Citizens Police Academy
The Citizens’ Police Academy is a 10- week program designed to give residents insight into the workings of our Police Department, provide opportunities to meet the officers serving their community, and deepen their understanding of what it means to be a police officer in Garner today. The academy aims to foster relationships between officers and the community by enhancing awareness of our roles and responsibilities. Additionally, it serves as a platform for feedback and suggestions for improvements.
In 2024, the department hosted two 10-week sessions, one during the spring and another in the fall. Each week, Department members cover one or more topics, and residents have opportunities
The Citizens Police Academy offers a comprehensive look at the Garner for hands-on practical exercises when Police Department during the 10-week-long program. applicable. Classes include Introduction to Class / Department Overview, Communications, Vehicle Stops, K-9, Arrest, Search and Seizure, Crime Scene Investigations, Forensics, Use of Force, Rapid Deployment, and Traffic Enforcement / Crash Analysis / DWI Detection. After graduation, students can apply to the Citizens and Police Together team( CAPT).
