TRAFFIC CITATION AND CRASH DATA In 2019, the Garner Police Department issued a total of 4,537 traffic citations. This was a 64% increase from the 2,770 written in 2018. The increase in traffic enforcement can be attributed to improved staffing levels on the traffic safety team. The department investigated 1,620 crashes in 2019; 28 of which were identified as alcohol-related crashes. Officers investigated 298 injury crashes, three fatalities, and made 139 DWI arrests. We will continue to work collaboratively with citizens and other government agencies to encourage safe motor vehicle operation through defensive driving and voluntary compliance with traffic laws as well as strict enforcement efforts. The department received a grant in the fall of 2019 from the Governor’s Highway Safety Program for a Traffic Enforcement Officer position.
