Department Accreditation
IN MARCH 1994, the Garner Police Department
first became accredited by the Commission for
the Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies,
Inc. (CALEA). The department sought and has
maintained accredited status as a means of
benchmarking our policies and procedures
against international best practices for law
enforcement agencies, as a means of ensuring
effective service delivery to the citizens of
Garner, and as an ongoing demonstration
of commitment to professionalism through
voluntary adherence to national standards
Currently, there are 732 law enforcement
agencies accredited by CALEA within the United States.
Of those accredited, 59 law enforcement agencies
are in North Carolina. The Garner Police Department
is seeking its’ ninth re-accreditation from the CALEA
Commission. As part of this process, the agency is
required to submit annual reports, department statistics,
as well as have a yearly electronic file review completed
by a CALEA Compliance Service Member to document
continued compliance with the standards
required for law enforcement accreditation. The
final onsite review is scheduled for October
2020. The Garner Police Department is
currently complying with version 6.8 of the
Law Enforcement Standards manual which
includes 459 procedural standards. CALEA
accreditation is now conferred for a period of
four years.
