Newsletter No . 62 ; IRBMS clear . Siang or Xiang River is one of the three major tributaries of the Brahmaputra , the others being Lohit and Dibang . While Lohit and Dibang originate in India , Siang begins in Tibet and flows into Arunachal Pradesh before merging into the Brahmaputra along the Assam-Arunachal border . Siang in Arunachal Pradesh , India gives its name to the following districts ; East Siang district , West Siang district and Upper Siang district .
The reason could be constructed of tunnel under river Siang , known as Yarlung Tsangpo in Tibet . But it was denied by Chinese government in regard to diverting a channel over Tsangpo in Tibet which has become an issue of concern . After that , the Siang River has become muddy and slushy a very unusual phenomenon and the reason behind the river becoming dirty is still unconfirmed . A Congress MP from Arunachal East constituency Ninong Ering confirmed that the construction of a long tunnel has already started in the Yunnan Province as a rehearsal otherwise there is no other reason for the mighty river to be dirty in November . He also proposed a three-party team , one each from China and India besides an international observer , should visit the places in China . Led by the All Bogong Students ’ Union , locals in the district on Monday protested the alleged Chinese activities . In a memorandum to the Prime Minister , the students ’ body wrote
that China was constructing something huge on its side . “ Siang River is the lifeline of our entire Siang and Brahmaputra Valley where biodiversity of the entire region will get affected if diversion is done ,” they wrote in the memo .

The Bhagirath Prayas Samman awards in 2017 and the inaugural Anupam Mishra Medal for the exemplary media work on rivers were awarded on the India Rivers Day Nov 25 , 2017 . It was given by Honorable Justice Madan Lokur of Supreme Court . Meenachil Nadee Samrakshana Samithi of Kerala was awarded the Bhagirath Prayas Samman award in organisation category and Shri Mahavir Singh of Rajasthan won the award in individual category . The first Anupam Mishra Medal has been awarded to Arati Rao , who has relentlessly tried to bring river into focus through her writing , photography and arts . Meenachil Nadee Samrakshana Samithi , Kerala In appreciation of its dedicated efforts , in protecting and working to restore the ecological integrity of the Meenachil River feeding the Vembanad Lake — a Ramsar site in Kerala following a basin approach and an inclusive engagement process .
