CHAPTER 2: THE STORY OF IDA BEATRICE WATERS:
(3 OCTOBER 1884 TO 1 FEBRUARY 1978, AGED 95)
e are going to look back as far as we can along two genetic lines starting with Ida’s
Mother’s origins. For this we go back to:

ELISHA and ANN KING of Gloucestershire England, who had amongst others, a son
called Phillip:
PHILLIP KING (b 1790) married MARY/MARIA (b 1790). This couple was of Kentish yeoman
stock and had four children born in Chatham, when at age 30 they joined the 1820 Settlers
arriving in SA aboard the Kennersley Castle. If you have access to my Photo Diary of our
Ancestors you will find a copy of Phillip’s Death Notice wherein it is stated that he died at home
in Grahamstown on 5th April 1861 aged 74. Recorded dates are often fairly flexible but whether
he was 71 or 74 is no longer relevant. His Occupation is recorded as ‘Bell-Ringer’. Now that’s
something different!
Philip and Mary’s children at the time of arrival in South Africa were:
Firstly, RICHARD: The famous DICK KING (1813 - 1871) aged seven, and three younger
children: Andrew (5), Elizabeth (3), and John (1). The family
