As winter approaches , having a vibrant colorful garden may be the furthest thing from your mind . In addition to watering plants , trees and shrubs , there is more we should do to prepare our lawns and gardens for the cold months ahead , and to be ready for Spring .

The first thing that should be done is to clean out any annuals that are past their prime . Cleaning out dead foliage will simplify your spring cleaning and make your lawn or garden more pleasant to look at during the winter . Also consider removing any unwanted plants that you no longer desire to have in your landscape .
Late Fall is also a great time to plant trees and shrubs to allow them a chance to become established before the heat of the summer arrives . Pruning most trees , bushes and shrubs before early February helps their development . However , you should know about how your trees bloom . A few trees , such as apple and pear , bloom off buds that were set in the Fall . Trees such as these should be done after they bloom . Late Fall and Winter is also a grea time to spread grass seed directly onto your lawn without turning the soil ; however , it will require extra maintenance during the winter . You will need to make sure that water is supplied to the grass during germination and then mowed as needed .
