GAINESVILLE LIVING 14 HOLIDAY 2023 spending in our downtown shops is helping out your neighbor and keeping your downtown community thriving ,” said Davidson . “ The purchases our customers make literally keep our lights on and our doors open . They make sure we can donate to local charities and fundraisers . Purchases from our Farmhouse Fresh collection , for example , just funded some new pet beds that will be donated to Noah ’ s Ark animal shelter .” Special Events
There are also quite a few local events to get people into the holiday spirit .
One of downtown Gainesville ’ s popular recurring events , Ladies Night from 5 p . m . to 8 p . m .
“ Ladies Night the Thursday before Thanksgiving always brings everyone out downtown ,” said Davidson . “ We continue the party downtown the next day for Pink Friday , which is a movement to encourage local shopping first .”
Pink Friday began in 2020 as an encouragement to do holiday shopping from local retailers before going to chain stores on Black Friday .
“ This encourages people to ‘ Shop Small First ’ before Black Friday ,” said Brinkley . “ We have ‘ pink ’ artwork notecards from some of our artists that will be free with purchases all day along with discounts .”
There will also still be plenty of activity on Black Friday following Thanksgiving and on Small Business Saturday Nov . 25 .
“ We are having an Artist Market on Small Business Saturday where some of our artists will be set up at tables throughout the gallery with additional artworks , especially smaller gift items ,” said Brinkley . “ The artists will be at the gallery , allowing customers to meet them , interact and ask questions about their artwork .”
“ We will have a horse & carriage rides to take customers throughout downtown to participating boutiques ,” said Nanney . “ We will also be serving hot chocolate & snacks .”
Many storefronts will be staying open until 6 p . m . on Dec . 7 , waiting for the annual Gainesville Christmas parade to begin . Then on Dec . 9 , there will be plenty of activity with local vendors at the Farmers Market and downtown shops open .
“ The downtown merchants host Jingle & Mingle in conjunction with the Morton Museum ’ s Historic Holiday Home Tour ,” said Otts .
There will also be a special visitor from the North Pole at Kayson ’ s Candy Company on Dec . 16 . Christmas Market
In addition to the downtown activity , excitement is stirring at the old outlet mall in the north part of Gainesville along I-35 .
The mall , now rebranded as Thirty- Five & Liberty , is aiming to host north Texas ’ largest Christmas market .
“ We ’ ll have food trucks and local booths and things like that ,” said Naomi Malts , who is working on organizing the market and all the events going on .
Malts is the daughter of Neil Snow , who owns and operates Tractor Bob ’ s at the Thirty-Five and Liberty . She recalls shopping in Gainesville as a kid and hopes to bring some of that excitement to the Christmas Market . “ I did all my school shopping here ,” said Malts . “ It was a destination , like we would all load up in the car and we ’ d come spend the weekend in Gainesville , and we ’ d go shopping . Gainesville was where you went to go shopping back in the day .”
In addition to the vendors and shops at the Christmas Market , there will also be a lot of fun things for kids and social activities .
“ We ’ re having Santa Saturdays … where you can get pictures with Santa , and then Storytime with Santa so after the pictures end , you can come and Santa will read a story ,” said Malts . “ We ’ re going to have a big art gallery that ’ s open to the public , and Gainesville ISD is coming in with artwork from the kiddos , and a couple different local art studios are coming in and putting their work up .”
There will also be a large number of events unique to each weekend . “ The DDA [ Downtown Development Association ] is putting
