LONDON, ENGLAND ALL-BRITAIN SENIOR CAMOGIE CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL OCTOBER 5, 2015 TARA TOO TOUGH FOR GAELS BY JAMIE CASEY Hawkes picked up where she left off at the beginning of the second period, pointing another free with yet another beautiful strike of the ball, before a point from Caroline Kelly extended Tara’s lead to 11 points. Tara won the newly-named All-Britain Senior Camogie Championship with a 3-10 to 1-04 win over new side Shire Gaels at the Irish TV Grounds in Ruislip on Sunday week last, October 4th The Gaels, an amalgamated side made up of players from Liverpool Wolfe Tones, John Mitchels (Birmingham), Fullen Gaels (Manchester) and Erin Go Bragh, threatened to come back into proceedings soon after though. Having won the previous six London Senior Camogie Championships, it is their seventh successive title and it rarely looked in doubt in a game they dominated from start to finish. A long puck from Karen O’Leary sailed into the penalty area and Emma McParland reacted quickest to bundle in a goal after Tara keeper Fiona O’Grady’s initial block. The two sides traded scores early on before Lucy Hawkes began to take control of the game for Tara, slotting over three consecutive points – one from play and two from frees. Aoife Murphy then scored a ‘45 with the Gaels coming to life, though Ciara Daly shot an effort wide as they looked to up the pressure on Tara. Her fellow half-forward Claire Ryan was also proving a thorn in the side of the Gaels, scoring a point from play, while Hawkes continued to show impressive accuracy from dead balls. However, Tara’s class shone through as they soon stifled the Gaels’ new-found determination, with Hawkes adding to her tally with another free over the bar. TARA 3-10 SHIRE GAELS 1-04 With Tara already in control, Orlaith Jenning ensured they went into the break with a 1-07 to 0-01 lead after flicking past Gaels keeper Ariane Parcell for the first goal of the game. 22 And any hopes of the Gaels making a second-half comeback were effectively put to bed when Hawkes’ attempt from a distant free slipped under the crossbar seeing the green flag raised for a second Tara goal.
