In getting to the decider, O’Shay’s the No. 4 seed pulled off something of a surprise when defeating the No. 1 seed and league-leaders Cowin Construction in convincing fashion with a 7 point victory in the first semi-final. McGurk’s finished as the No. 2 side but they had to fight all the way and just edged out Amsterdam Tavern by one point in a tense second semifinal. The final was highly anticipated and a fine crowd both from other league teams as well as team families and friends were on hand on at St. Vincent Park, Saturday 27th June. GOOD START The No. 2 seed McGurk’s made their intentions known Photo: Carla Scuzzo from the get-go. Inside the first quarter they hit the net and added four points and were looking in the groove. O’Shay’s started sluggishly with only 0-2 on the board during that early period. O’Shay’s upped their game when adding a goal of their own and three points but McGurk’s stayed consistent with 1-3 themselves to take a 2-7 to 1-5 lead at the half. McGurks in that first half used possession well and took their scores but in contrast O’Shay’s, who saw plenty of the ball could not get it done in front of the posts and shot far too many wides for the amount of possession they had won. CAME OUT SWINGING ANEW McGurks intent on finishing what they started came out swinging for the second half as they added another couple and a brace of points and suddenly O’Shay’s were in a hole, a 10 point hole to be precise with time not on their side. To give them credit O’Shay’s recovered from this latest blow and landed 1-1 to almost half the deficit now down to six. O’Shay’s had periods of dominance during the half but they still could not stop McGurk’s from scoring. Though the No. 4 seed finished strongly McGurk’s were able to maintain that six point margin and ran winners on a scoreline of 4-12 to 3-9. 25
