LOCAL ETHOS
This year’s Texas Championship series was sponsored
by Breckenridge and NACB and GAA member’s Colm
Egan and Kevon Boylan officiated for the finals. Austin
co-founder Doab paid tribute to the Men’s A four in row
win and worthy opponents, Dallas.
“The group was thrilled to retain the title and claim the
4 in a row. Dallas continue to raise their game and playing them in their own back yard was always going to be
a big challenge, at half time we all knew we hadn’t done
ourselves justice, so the second half performance was very
satisfying,” he enthused. He added that the win means
a lot for the club whose community and local ethos is
central to everything.
“It means a lot to the club, developing the games with local
based players in Austin and getting new Irish arrivals to
quickly adjust to the setup and the community aspect can
be challenging. but we’ve been extremely lucky that all the
new Irish lads over the last few years have bought into our
club ethos and have delivered when needed.”
Like football, Hurling is also being developed in Texas and
the forthcoming GAA Hurling All Stars later this year to
Austin should set the tone to help build the ancient sport
alongside football in the Lone Star State.
“Next Year we’re hoping for further development on
the number of Ladies team and the continued development of the games within the local communities, plus
adding a hurling aspect to the Championships,” Doab
explained.
“The development of the games in Austin, across Texas
and the Southwest is further evident by the GAA/GPA
Hurling All Stars visiting Austin this December. We’re
extremely proud to have the best Hurlers in the world
visit us here and really excited about the potential of
showcasing the games and promoting the wonderful
sport of Hurling in the region.”
