The four day convention began at a time that in many
ways was perfect for the advancement of Gaelic sports
as the national convention began on March 18th,
one day after St. Patrick’s Day. Kathlyn Quinn of San
Francisco and Terry Lynch in Seattle were given the
responsibility of manning the booth throughout the
event. However, they were not alone in their efforts as
four high school PE teachers, who have direct experience teaching Gaelic sports, also stepped forward to
volunteer their time – Terence Doherty from the San
Francisco Unified School District, Tracy Schellberg
and Brendan Hyland from Issaquah School District in
Seattle, and Kate Agnew from the Lake Washington
School District also in Seattle. Students from Seattle’s O’Dea high school, an Irish Christian Brothers
school, volunteered to act as demonstration models.
LARGE NUMBERS AND INTEREST
The opening day of the convention arrived and it
quickly became clear that a wider variety of PE professionals were there than was originally expected. The
target group of active school teachers was present in
large numbers, but two unexpected additional groups
were also in attendance: University students in the final phases of their PE Ed. degrees who were preparing to move into student teaching positions, and the
