Blues over Na Fianna, Onkas over Morrigans, while Western Ireland defeated Rovers. Flinders were the bye team. Ahead of last weekend’s end of regular league, the only real difference from the week prior was that Na Fianna’s chances of making qualification in the men’s league had perhaps vanished. On Friday evening, Feb 13th, the big two in the ladies league the Blues and Onkaparinga went head-to-head in the opening game. The Blues dominated the first half when taking a 1-5 to 0-1 lead at the break. Onkas did put in a better showing in the second period but they were unable to overtake the Blues who went on to restore their leader’s position with a 2-8 to 0-6 victory. Belinda White, Jane Fitzgerald, and Georgie Smith were central to the Blues effort. The second game was the turn of the men where surprise packet the Irish Australians took on defending champions Onkas. This game however didn’t go the young Australians way as two early goals had them on the backfoot and trailing by 1--5 to 0-1 at half time. The second period wasn’t much better for Irish Australians as Onkaparinga continued on the front foot doubling their scores to run out comfortable winners on a scoreline of 2-10 to 0-8. Showing leadership throughout for Onkas were Wade Saunders, Joe Campbell, and Brad Gosling, while for Irish Australian’s Matt Doecke and Kane Chapman did their part. On Sunday, Port Districts were given a Walkover by Flinders O’Neills. In the second men’s game, Western Ireland and Na Fianna took to the field and it was W. Irl who grabbed the spoils by 1-15 to 1-8, and the loss for Na Fianna coupled with the WO for Ports Districts meant that they didn’t make the final four. The club had better luck in Ladies Football when Na Fianna dispatched Western Ireland by 6-15 to 1-2. A four goal blitz in the first half laid the foundation for victory. The second ladies game and final game of the regular season ended in a comprehensive win for Flinders over Rovers by 8-28 to 0-3. In the Men’s League, St. Brendans finished top of the table and for that honour received the Farnan Cup and now go on to play Western Ireland in one semi-final.
