Prior to the pandemic, State Board of Pardons and Paroles' officials continued to engage offenders in Georgia prisons. Parole leadership spoke with corrections officials and state inmates at Emanuel Womens Facility and Metro Reentry Facility. The visits took place in December and January.
Engaging the state inmate population is a part of the Parole Board's process for making informed decisions. Chairman Terry Barnard was among those who made the visit to the Metro Reentry Facility. The facility operated by the Georgia Department of Corrections has a mission to prepare offenders for community reentry.
"Our message to parole eligible offenders is to be working toward reentry on a daily basis," stated Chairman Barnard. "At the time of consideration, the Board is looking at everything, their history and their institutional record," he added.
The State Board of Pardons and Paroles was among the criminal justice agencies congratulating the Georgia Department of Community Supervision's newest officers. A Basic Community Supervision Officer Training Course Graduation Program was in March at the Georgia Public Safety Training Center in Forsyth, Georgia.
Partnerships include those with law enforcement.
Parole Board Member David Herring and Executive Director of Parole Chris Barnett met with officials in Moultrie and Augusta in December.
"Any opportunity to increase communications with our law enforcement partners is one that we should pursue," stated Herring. "As we are all working toward public safety, it's important to be able to work with sheriffs, policing agencies and public safety agencies," he added.
Parole staff met with Colquitt County Sheriff Rod Howell and another meeting involved Deputy Chief of Police Jasper Cooke with the Augusta University Police Department.

Anti-Gang Network
The State Board of Pardons and Paroles participated in the Georgia Anti-Gang Network meeting last December in Atlanta. The network was established and is led by the State Attorney General Chris Carr.

Governor Brian Kemp, a partner in the network, has created a Gang Task Force to assist law enforcement in combating and prosecuting gang related crime in Georgia.
