Highlights
New Station 5 Completed
The original Fire Station 5, built in 1963, was closed and demolished
in 2015 to make way for a new fire station. New Fire Station 5
opened in May 2016. The new fire station is 2.5 times larger than the
original station. The new station is
10,036 square feet, allowing it to
serve a dual capacity as a fire
house and as home to the Special Events section.
Engine 5 is staffed by a three member crew, consisting of a
Lieutenant, Apparatus Operator, and one Firefighter, and is
assigned to each of the three 24-hour shifts at this station.
The Special Events section consists of a Deputy Chief, Captain,
and two Emergency Management Planners.
Construction of the station was made possible by bond funds
approved by voters in the 2008 Capital Improvement Program.
The station has attained LEED status (Leadership in Energy
and Environmental Design) through the Green Building
Certification Institute.
McNutt & Peach Elementary Schools - Community Support
At the beginning of the school year, and late in FY 2016, two
Arlington Independent School District (AISD) elementary
schools, McNutt and Peach, were still under construction. In
order to open at the beginning of the school year, specific
support efforts needed to occur. In coordination with AISD
officials, Arlington Fire and Police Departments deployed
personnel to the schools during the school day to ensure the
safety and security of the students and staff. From August to
November 2016, AFD
provided support for safety
issues in collaboration with AISD staff to ensure students had
a safe environment to begin their school year. Arlington
Firefighters were embedded in each school to safeguard the
students from construction threats throughout the school day.
Through this cooperation and coordination, students were
able to have a safe environment to continue their studies with
as little disruption as possible to their academic day, while
AISD completed the construction of these new schools.
